Milled from Golden Fields
A new book by Graham Edge
Wheat flour is one of the oldest foodstuffs known to mankind and even in the twenty first century it is still a vitally important and fundamental food. It has numerous uses, ranging from being the primary ingredient in bread, biscuits and cakes, to an adjunct in brewing.
The milling industry relies heavily on road transport, firstly for taking wheat into the mills and then for distributing flour to diverse users. These vary from massive bakeries needing four or five bulk tanker loads daily, to small bakers' shops using just a few sacks weekly. Then of course there are the domestic packs for home use sold in supermarkets.
This book presents a lavish pictorial record of flour millers' transport operations from the days of horses and carts to the present. It records the important, pioneering breakthroughs in bulk deliveries for the benefit of millers, drivers and customers. It also provides an important historical review of the flour milling industry and recalls millers no longer in existence through photographs of their vehicles. These have been sourced from several contributors and a high proportion is in colour.
