COMPANY OUTLINE

SATAKE ESM (UK) LIMITED is part of  ESM INTERNATIONAL INC., which is wholly owned by the SATAKE CORPORATION.

The UK sorting division is referred to as SATAKE ESM.

BRIEF HISTORY

1931:  ESM began business in Lowell , Michigan .  The first machines were designed to sort the Michigan navy pea bean, or baked beans as we know them in the UK .

1951: ESM was purchased by Mandrell Industries Inc., a broadly based engineering holding company, and was moved to Houston , Texas to enable ESM to introduce its new rice sorting equipment into the rice growing and processing area around Houston .

1959:  Mandrell Industries was purchased by the Ampex Corporation and ESM was expanded considerably during the 1960s sharing development facilities with the Petty Company (also Ampex owned), who were introducing modern electronics into the oil and gas exploration industries.  During the 1960s new markets were entered by ESM, notably bichromatic sorting of raw coffee beans and peanuts using the vacuum drum bowl machine.  These machines were also exported to all parts of the world growing this type of product.

1973:  Geosource was formed by the outright purchase of Mandrell Industries including ESM and the acquisition of several oil industry related companies in the USA .  Following the change of ownership ESM was expanded and development took place on a number of projects, both within and outside the traditional sorting machine markets.  Some quite rapid advances occurred in the optics field and the use of digital electronics.

1984:  ESM became a completely independent company. Geosource continued to grow within the oil industry while ESM flourished in the food, pharmaceutical and other industries with the holding company “ODISTA”.

1991: Satake acquires Robinson Milling Systems of the UK (incorporating Henri Simon Ltd.). This marks the beginning of Satake’s flour milling activities in the UK , closely followed by the purchase of ESM. Rapid expansion took place and the combined resources have produced a number of machines which has automatically reduced sorting costs.  The forté  of recent developments is seen in unique optics and sensors with increased reliability.

1993:  Satake Japan and ESM Houston engineers develop the ScanMaster optical sorter.  This is the first high production colour sorter with high resolution cameras (CCD).  Followed in 1994 by the Infra-red version, offering the only true bichromatic visible and IR machine on the market.

1993-9:  SJP builds a new facility in Hiroshima .  Satake USA builds a new test mill for Rice and Cereal Applications.    Satake opens a new $20 million manufacturing plant in China . Flour and rice milling machinery will be produced here. ESM (UK) and Satake UK move to new facilities in Stockport .

2000’s Development of the ScanMaster continues to include touch screen controls, parts to offer increased lighting and contrast.  The UV version was also introduced for the almond and coffee industries.

2004: Satake USA and ESM Satake manufacture a new machine in Brazil to offer a low cost, high capacity, digital sorting option to the cereals market including farmers, grain stores and flour mills.

2006:  Development continues on more advanced technologies to meet all market requirements.
